What happens if I miss a debt payment?
A missed payment can lead to charges, interest, arrears activity and credit-record consequences depending on the agreement. Essential and priority bills may need urgent attention.
What happens after a missed payment depends on the type of debt and the terms of the agreement. The creditor may contact you, add interest or charges where permitted, or record arrears with credit reference agencies.
Start by separating priority and non-priority commitments
If missing payments affects your home, essential services or another priority obligation, getting help early can matter. MoneyHelper specifically recommends free debt advice where you are worried about missing a priority payment, are facing bailiffs, a court summons, loss of gas or electricity, or repossession.
Do not ignore contact
Check that letters and messages are genuine, keep records and ask the creditor for information you do not understand. If the payment problem is not temporary, free debt advice can help you understand the wider position.
