What happens if a debt collector contacts me?
A debt collection contact is not the same thing as a court judgment or bailiff visit. Verify the debt, the firm and what stage the matter has reached.
A creditor may use its own collections team or instruct another organisation to seek payment. A collection letter or call is not itself a court judgment.
Check who is contacting you
Confirm the name of the creditor, the amount claimed, the account reference and whether the collector is acting for the creditor or says the debt has been assigned.
Do not share more personal information than necessary
If you are unsure that a contact is genuine, verify the organisation through an independently obtained contact route rather than relying only on the number or link in an unexpected message.
If you cannot afford the payment requested
Free debt advice can help you understand what to prioritise and what options exist. This site does not negotiate with creditors or tell you what payment to offer.
