What happens if I cannot pay council tax?

Council tax is a priority household bill. Arrears can escalate through the council's recovery process, so early contact and free debt advice can be important.

Reviewed 2 November 2026General information, not debt advice

Council tax arrears should not be treated in the same way as an ordinary unsecured consumer debt. Councils have statutory recovery powers and the process can escalate if arrears remain unpaid.

Act early

Contact the council if you cannot pay as required and check whether you may qualify for Council Tax Reduction or another local support route. If several debts are competing for limited money, a free debt adviser can help you understand priorities.

Facing enforcement?

If you have received a summons, liability order or enforcement notice, consider obtaining free debt advice promptly.
